First Reading: Zeph 3:14–18a Responsorial Psalm: Is 12:2–3, 4, 5–6 Second Reading: Phil 4:4–7 Gospel: Lk 3:10–18 The Third Sunday of Advent was once known in Latin as Gaudete (“Let us rejoice”) Sunday. And certainly today’s first two readings call us, in the words of the responsorial antiphon, to “cry out with joy and gladness.” Yet a closer look at these two texts reveals a distinctive feature of Advent joy. The prophecy of Zephaniah, from which the first reading is taken, stands behind another
